How to do practical Aikido that can be used against multiple attackers when taking tests and when in a survival situation. The information in this book is much easier than the normal Aiki jujitsu taught in Aikido classes. Practicing three times a week you can be very good at this in a year. Far better than you normally see. With the basics taught here it is easy to know how to make the Aiki jujitsu work. These basics are also the key to effective Aikido Freestyle. Hikuta, called Kuta here, provides strong basic information on striking that is seamlessly integrated into the Aikido throws without gratuitous movements. It turns out that when you properly learn the basics of Aikido you also know the advanced aikido. This book deals with both topics together. Material on weapon use is also included.

What an amazing gem of a book. I am a student of Taekwondo and Tai Chi, searching Amazon for a nice book on low kicks. And I stumbled upon this book. I can’t remember what drew me to look into it, the title maybe? I think it was the word ‘freestyle’- which I associate with swimming, not Aikido. The book promised to inform me how to do “Freestyle Aikido.” What on earth is freestyle Aikido? Using Amazon’s “Look-Inside” feature, I let the back cover explain Freestyle. Now I am interested. I have never heard of Kilpatrick-sensei before, so I read “About The Author” – an Engineer with a PhD in Psychology, with a background in Judo, Karate and Fencing, who is a 5th Dan in Aikido, training in Louisville Kentucky. Huh! The book’s “About the Author” section itself is perhaps the most interesting “About the Author” section I've come across, because Kilpatrick-sensei reveals so much about himself and his art. Including his understanding of what makes a good martial art.

Inside the book is pure martial art goldmine. Kilpatrick-sensei has found a way to demystify the inscrutable truths of Aikido. What is Aiki? “The way of moving that cause people to fall down.” That spoke to me. I was hooked. I bought the Kindle Book. Best $9.95 spent this week!

What makes a book great? Content? Layout? Pictures? Writing style? Perhaps. I measure a book by what it does to me. If you've ever exercised before dawn, and witnessed sunrise, you can agree with me about the sheer awesomeness of the experience. It is a grand sight, a deep feeling, with a tranquil sense of understanding of our place in the universe. I think this is where the word “enlightened” must come from --- to be touched by the first rays of a new day and rescued from darkness. Kilpatrick-sensei in certain places of his book evokes that “wow” moment. Take for example a classic paradox of Aikido --- Aikido is simultaneously described as having no technique, or having thousands of techniques, or only 1 technique. How can all of these statements be true? Kilpatrick-sensei neatly explains how and why each description is perfectly accurate and true and valid at the same time. And when I understood his explanation, I saw the beauty of truth behind paradox. How did I feel? Like I just saw sunrise! Beautiful.

If you love Aikido, and you are an expectant beginner like me, this book should be among the very first in your reading list. It will no doubt shape how you view and practice the art. What a gem!

Survival Aikido How to do Freestyle eBook John Kilpatrick 5th Dan Temple Guard PhD Reviews

I have been involved in martial arts since 1992, and have been a student of Kilpatrick Sensei since early 2011. I have seen this book through many changes. Ours is not a static martial art whose main goal is to pass on a long tradition; our art is dynamic, constantly adapting to fit the newer and greater (more difficult) challenges we are throwing at ourselves. We take great pains and endure some level of frustration in order to ensure that what we are doing is useful, effective.
When one is caught up in such a dynamic movement, it is difficult to slow down, take a breath, and capture the ideas in the form of a book (or painting, story, etc.). But this is the artist's duty. Thankfully, John took the time, and the result is this book, a great introduction to the art that we practice.
Incidentally, it is no exaggeration when John says that the practitioner can become competent at freestyle within just a few months after six months of practicing John's style I felt more confident in my martial abilities than in all the previous twenty years.
Recognizing that such a book is extremely hard to be clear, like trying to explain how to walk, textual information was very unclear. Pictures were also poor quality with insufficient numbers of them sequentially to visually obtain any understanding of movements.
Some goo information but doesn't really teach the angles and different scenarios of Randori...

This is the most easily understood book on Aikido techniques I have read in forty years of study. I contacted the author by e-mail and he was most accommodating. I look forward to volume 2. Thank you, Dr.Kilpatrick.
Good information but I was hoping it came with video to watch.
This book needs some multimedia explanations with it, as aikido relies a lot in details to be effective.
